Before you start, it helps to be able to answer three things — even roughly:

What will you mainly use it for? The use case sets the bar for which features matter.
What’s your budget? A range is enough; you can adjust it later.
What do you refuse to compromise on? Naming one or two non-negotiables makes trade-offs obvious.
